How to's and money-saving tips from resident homeowner and mortgage professional, Cathy West

Four signs you’ve hired a good real estate agent

No matter how experienced you are in purchasing homes, hiring a real estate agent is a good move when entering the home buying process. However, you will want to be sure that you are employing someone who knows what they're doing.

Here are four signs that you've hired a good real estate agent:

No. 1 – They have the right qualifications
Anyone who passes a test can become a real estate agent, but you will want to be sure that the person you hire has all of the right qualifications to assist in your purchase. For example, you will want someone who has experience buying and selling homes in your area, so they are able to provide insight that you may not be aware of. Additionally, it would be smart to hire an agent who is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors, as these professionals have a certain standard they have to adhere to.

No. 2 – They have experience
The last thing you want is someone who is assisting in their first transaction, so you should make sure you hire an agent that has plenty of experience. Don't choose an agent who only has six months experience. Go for someone who has been in the business for at least a couple years, as this person is able to provide the best assistance.

No. 3 – They return emails and phone calls
One of the most important things about a relationship with your real estate agent is strong communication. So, if your agent returns emails and phone calls in a timely manner, chances are you have someone who knows what they are doing. Of course, that isn't necessarily the case, as you could have someone who has no idea what they're talking about. But more often than not, strong communication is a sign of a good real estate agent.

No. 4 – They set realistic expectations
You may be excited about your real estate agent saying that you are guaranteed to get a certain amount of money when selling your home, but you want to be sure that this is realistic. For example, if your agent says you will get $1 million – and you know that can't be true – you might have a bad real estate agent on your hands.
